Dear Editor,
Permit me to share some of my thoughts on this subject matter. I have noticed the way we treat our sports men and women in Guyana. This unwarranted treatment must stop now or we would lose the opportunity of actually seeing the good of our young athletes on show.
I therefore suggest that we change the way we operate when it comes to our current and future sports men and women in Guyana. I am also suggesting that we put together a class (A) and a class (B) list of donors from the business community, and perhaps the government to implement a new law or order that would call for a percentage of all class (A) and (B) businesses to contribute to a specific sport or athlete for the development of sports more so the financial resources for overseas trip to participate and compete at the highest level.
The private sector and civil standing society is also welcome to play their part to help in accelerating the drive of the sports sector in Guyana. However, we choose to put it together, whether through a governmental or privately run agency, it should be made up of former sports men and women who have a vested interest in our sports going forward. Some people seem to think that sports and games are unimportant things that people choose to do, at times when they are not working. Not true but in fact sports and games can be of great value, especially to people who work with their brain most of the day and should not be treated as amusements or callous. Sports and games make our bodies strong and fit and also prevent us from getting to fat and keep us healthy. In closing these are not their only benefits, or uses. It gives us valuable lessons and practices in making our eyes, brain and muscles work effectively.
