-still probing Alpha Hotel shooting death
The Police Office for Professional Responsibility (OPR) is preparing a report on the escape two Tuesdays ago of a murder suspect from La Grange Police Station.
Anthony Jhagroo, who was being held for questioning into the murder of 31-year-old mechanic, Yogeshwar Shivcharran, broke out of the lock-ups while the two ranks who were on duty, were at the front of the Police Station.
The two ranks were reportedly placed under close arrest, but have since been released.
The 20-year-old suspect resides at Belle West. Yogeshwar Shivcharran, of Lot 485 Belle West succumbed last week Sunday, days after he was beaten by a group of neighbours.
A post mortem examination revealed that Shivcharran died from blunt trauma to the head. Kaieteur News understands that Shivcharran, during a mental breakdown, took off his clothes and went to his neighbour’s residence where a group of young men were having a drink.
The men, who were reportedly under the influence of alcohol, became annoyed with the mechanic and started pelting him with beer bottles before beating him in the head and about his body.
The 31-year-old man was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he succumbed.
Meanwhile, the OPR is still to complete its investigation in the fatal shooting of 52-year-old Alvin Joseph, during a drug bust at the Alpha Hotel.
Police had stated that Joseph had shot at them, and that they were forced to return fire.
Police stated that they recovered some 5.5 kilograms of cocaine after arresting Joseph and three other hotel employees.
The employees were subsequently released. A police official stated that the cocaine was found in the slain man’s car.
Joseph was a licenced firearm holder and the 9mm handgun that was allegedly retrieved from him was licenced to a First Avenue, Bartica business where Joseph was employed.
Joseph’s son, Damien Tim, is alleging that his father had surrendered when he was shot. He also denied that his father was involved in illegal activities. According to the son, Joseph worked for a mining company in Bartica and would frequently travel to Georgetown to sell gold or to buy spare parts for motor vehicles.
Tim alleged that about four men had come to his father’s North Ruimveldt, Georgetown home and picked him up with a vehicle some hours prior to him being shot.
