According to Jamaica Tallawahs coach, Paul Nixon, Andre Russell will be ready to rejoin the second-place Caribbean Premier League (CPL) team for their game against the Guyana Amazon Warriors today.
Russell has a knee injury and missed the Tallawah’s defeat to the Warriors last week. According to the coach, Russell was missed. “We missed Andre and he’s been recovering well and he’s raring to go,” said Nixon in an interview with the Jamaica Observer.
The injury had begun to tell after the first match of the Tallawahs’ season, with Russell not bowling in the side’s victories over the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and the Trinbago Knight Riders.
While he did bat in both innings, his 24 from 18 deliveries against the Knight Riders was clearly not pain free, the batsman hobbling quite noticeably during the innings. Against the Patriots he slammed an invaluable 34 from 20 deliveries.
Russell was also set to miss the abandoned game against the Barbados Tridents, where the Tallawahs, through a masterful knock of 42 from Chris Gayle, racked up 106 in just 10 overs. Showers of rain ensured that the loss of Russell from the lineup did not hurt the Tallawahs too much.
“As far as I know, he’s ready for it. He’s played a lot of cricket and he was probably due a rest at some stage. But being the guy that he is and the passion that he has got for the game, he wants to do well,” said Nixon.
While Nixon is happy to have Russell back, he believes that some of the less established players in the lineup need to get into the habit of performing at a high level to suppliment the efforts of the big all-rounder, Gayle and Kumar Sangakarra.
The game against the Warriors tomorrow marks the first home game for the Tallawahs, who won two of four away games to start their CPL campaign. The Jamaican franchise currently sits second in the six-team table, five points adrift of the Warriors who have started their CPL season very quickly. (Sportsmax)
