– lowest in ten years in ‘A’ and ‘F’ Divisions
The Guyana Police Force has recorded a 20 percent reduction in serious crimes, with ‘A’ and ‘F’ Divisions having the lowest crime rates in ten years.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said yesterday that ‘A’ Division
(Georgetown/East Bank Demerara) had a 29 percent drop in serious crimes. This is the lowest the Division, which normally has the highest number of murders, including execution-style killings and other serious offences, has had in ten years.
‘F’ Division (Interior locations) had a 50 percent reduction in serious crimes.
As in ‘A’ Division, this is the lowest serious crime reduction in the past ten years.
This has resulted in the Force recording a 20 percent reduction in serious crimes.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum attributed this success to several factors. One of these is that the police “have made their presence felt” in high-profile crime areas such as Albouystown and Tiger Bay.
The Force has also been strengthening its relationship with the public, through its police-community partnership programme.
The success in crime reduction is also being attributed to overseas training of the Major Crimes Unit and other ranks, and the formation of the Serial Offenders Unit.
Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud revealed that the Force has been receiving assistance from the Jamaican Force Constabulary. He said that out of an assessment, the Force “will start to plan capacity building in intelligence, and to see that interface between crime intelligence and Special Branch.”
