Dear Editor;
The Coalition Government of APNU/AFC during its election campaign accused the PPP/C of misusing taxpayers’ money on uneconomic projects such as the Marriott Hotel.
Now that they are in power, it is planning to spend taxpayers’ resources on a casino to encourage gambling. This came to light recently when Beverly Harper, Chairman of Atlantic Hotels, owner of the Marriott property, disclosed that it had drawn down funds from the original Republic Bank loan to complete its casino. Her view that the hotel is only viable with a casino signals, a high level of incompetence which should prompt the Chairman’s immediate resignation.
This is taking the uneconomic Marriott Hotel property further into debt which the poor taxpayers would have to pay. I would think that the best option of the Government would be to sell the hotel and pay off its debts rather than take it further into debt. Every day that passes the accumulated interest on loans increases and taxpayers’ equity is correspondingly eroded.
Is this a signal that the APNU/AFC Government is encouraging gambling? With so many other priorities has the Collation lost its way?
