Assistant Commissioner and Commander Ian Amsterdam presents the monetary reward to Young cyclist Zaman Khan.
held last weekend around the Mahaicony circuit in Demerara has been rewarded by the Police in B Division. Zaman Khan, 15 years old of Fyrish Village, Corentyne, Berbice, has been riding for less than a year and since his entry into the sport he has been making waves with his performances.
Khan, a member of the Flying Ace Cycling Club (FACC) was presented with a bicycle by businessman Steve Edwards and has not looked back since. A student of the Corentyne Secondary School, Khan destroyed the field to win the 21 miles road race in the Juvenile Category. The event which was part of a series of races held by the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) saw the cyclist riding four times around the Mahaicony circuit.
On Tuesday he was presented with a monetary reward by Commander of The Police B Division, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam. The presentation was made in the Commander Officer Strand and Cobourg Street, New Amsterdam office.
Amsterdam stated that he was pleased with the progress being made by Khan and readily decided to assist when approached. He said that the gesture is all part of the police force’s effort in assisting youths in sport and education which eventually would lead to then becoming better individuals. They in turn could act as role models to help influence others to become good citizens. The Commander said that with the many social ills and illicit activities being perpetrated by youths the police are taking a proactive approach in dealing with some of the situations which he says leads to the concept of team policing.
Khan for his part gave praise and thanks to God for guidance and strength. He also had words of thanks and appreciation to Commander Amsterdam for his kind words of advice and assistance so far. He also had word of thanks for his parents, Coach Randolph Roberts, businessman Steve Edwards who gave him his racing cycle and the management and staff of Water Chris Hotel.
