…30 of 36 cases set to be heard are for murder
The ceremonial opening of the June 2016 criminal session of the Berbice High Court was staged yesterday on Esplanade Road, New Amsterdam.
Leading the parade was a 27-strong police contingent which was led by parade commander Assistant Superintendent Keith Williams, and Inspector Welch as the parade inspector. The sergeant was Randy Hamilton
The rest of the contingent was made up of 24 trainees from the Felix Austin Police College in Berbice. The particpants marched from Police headquarters at Coburg Street and Strand before proceeding along Strand, New Amsterdam, to the High Court, and was accompanied by the police drum corps.
The salute was taken by Justice Brassington Reynolds who is presiding over the June Criminal sessions of the Berbice High Court. Justice Reynolds was accompanied by Justice Franklyn Holder who is presiding over the civil court in Berbice. They were escorted by Commander of Police B Division Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam; Assistant Superintendent of Police Ralph Parks, and officer in charge of the Guyana Fire Service in Berbice Patrick Carmichael. Officer in charge of the Guyana Prison Service in Berbice Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Paul James also formed the parade.
Accompanying the parade were Deputy Commander, Senior Superintendent Errol Watts, Traffic Officer Superintendent Boodnarine Persaud, and Inspectors Elton Davidson and Grace Bristol.
When the session was called to order Justice Reynolds spoke to the jurors present. He thanked those in attendance for coming out and outlined to them some of their roles and responsibilities as jurors.
The judge told the potential jurors that their roles are important in the dispensation of justice. He also outlined to them some implications and consequences of not turning up for jury service.
Some 36 men are awaiting trial – 30 for murder. Four are for sexual penetration, one for sexual assault and one for unlawful and malicious wounding.
