Essequibo jury split on rape
A rape case which started some weeks ago in the Essequibo high court, ended recently in hung jury after the 12 jurors failed to establish a unanimous decision. The decision was split down the middle.
The current sitting Judge, Justice James Bovell-Drakes has ordered a retrial before a new panel of Jurors and Judge. In the meantime however, the Judge ordered the prisoner to be remanded.
According to the police report compounded with a caution statement submitted and signed by the accused, it was revealed that the victim failed to recognise the accused contending that the place was dark when the alleged rape did occur.
The accused stated that he and the victim were engaged in an intimate relationship and that the sex was consensual. The incident allegedly occurred in August 2014, at Charity, Pomeroon.
Meanwhile, another rape trial will begin tomorrow at the Suddie High Court before Justice James Bovell-Drakes. The accused is a Richmond, Essequibo Coast man who is accused of raping a woman who lives in the same Village.
The man was implicated last year, after the woman told the police that she was repeatedly raped. However the man claimed that he was in the interior working when the allegations were levelled against him.
The accused was arrested and charged and eventually placed on almost $500,000 bail.
