A fourth passenger succumbed yesterday following Friday’s horrendous crash at Richmond Village, Essequibo.
Nineteen-year-old Stefan Benn is listed as the fourth fatality of Friday night’s crash. Kaieteur News had mistakenly reported on Sunday that five persons had died.
His mother; Dorcie Benn told this newspaper that Stefan was scheduled to join the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and begin his training on Monday.
She further stated that she learnt of her son’s involvement in the accident shortly before midnight on Friday. The mother of four said she was unaware that her son was a passenger of the bus because earlier that day, her son was assisting a cousin to fetch sand and had returned home at around 19.00 hrs before leaving to go at another cousin who had prepared some food for him.
However, sometime before midnight on Friday, Mrs. Benn said a number of persons called her enquiring about her son. She noted that at the time she was still unaware of his involvement in the accident. She further stated that she received a phone call from a close family friend telling her that Stefan was involved in an accident and that she needed to visit the hospital.
Benn said she immediately hired a taxi and headed to the hospital. She indicated that she was shocked to see that most of the injured persons appeared to be in their teens.
She became even more horrified when she saw the seemingly lifeless body of her son.
“He was in a terrible shape, he was lying still and unresponsive. I was only hearing the sound of the life machine.”
Benn, who was attached to a life-support system was officially pronounced dead early yesterday.
Glensford Stephen; the driver of the mini- bus, yesterday stated that he couldn’t remember what had happened on Friday night. Stephen said he was transporting about thirteen to fourteen persons from Dartmouth to a “Bingo” game at Anna Regina.
Stephen said all he recalled was hearing “blam”. He stated that he was driving at a moderate speed and was blinded by the lights of the approaching car.
One passenger, twenty-three-year-old Denroy Barrington, stated that the persons that are now dead were his friends and like most of the other survivors he couldn’t recall anything of the traumatic accident.
Three of the five surviving persons who were traveling in the car are hospitalized at the Suddie Public Hospital. Another unnamed survivor had to be transported to a City hospital.
One of the survivors indicated that the driver of the minibus had been consuming alcohol and was speeding at the time of the accident. The survivor stated that the bus driver attempted to take a turn at a fast rate and seemingly lost control and collided head on with a car.
A relative of one of the survivors stated that her husband told her that the Gavin Lawrie attempted to evade the bus but was unsuccessful.
Police have indicated that the mini- bus driver, Glensford Stephen, is under police guard at the Suddie Public Hospital.
