Urgent need to investigate exploitation at private schools
Dear Editor,
The revelations that are coming out from the letters on Mae’s Schools are serious so the Government needs to look into the matter. Private school teachers do not have a Union or any representative on their behalf so many times the contracts and terms of employment are not in the favor of the teachers. Private school teachers work long hours and for years and give the best of their health, energy and youth and get nothing in return but a month’s salary. There are no pension benefits and no health benefits. Teachers at private school are always on a ONE Year contract. So at any time teachers can be let go. Since when teaching has become a contract work?
The Government needs to get involved because more than 40% of students in our country are in private schools. This is a large number and again the teachers are the ones to mold, train and teach them. The private schools need to be regulated and the Labor ministry needs to pay a keen interest because of the sheer number of private school teachers.
I am calling on the Government to intervene and make things better. I hope the Government doesn’t make it worst. A union needs to be set up immediately and the contracts need to be scrutinize and thing need to be put right.
