Residents of Coldingen and a section of Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara, are laying the blame for the collapse of a section of the Coldingen Access road squarely at the feet of road construction company Dipcon and the tardiness of the Buxton/Foulis Neighbourhood Democratic Council.

The road collapsed into a culvert, making it impassable for commuters for most of yesterday, and residents are convinced that it buckled under the weight of the company’s heavy duty machinery that traverses there daily.
And it’s not that the signs of the imminent collapse were non-existent, especially since heavy rains pounded the coast over the past week.
Prior to the complete collapse, for several weeks commuters of the Coldingen Access Road were forced to navigate a huge crater to get to and from their homes.
The affected section of the road runs over a main culvert that facilitates drainage of the area.
The appeal from residents to the relevant authorities, including the Buxton/Foulis Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) to fix the small problem, fell on deaf ears.
In the meantime several vehicle owners had to fork out huge sums of money to repair the damage caused when they unknowingly drive or ride into the crater.
Well yesterday the situation got worse as the entire road caved in, rendering the road impassable.
“Is a low bed from Dipcon…it about forty something feet; is the fuss time I see something so long. Estate truck and all does run hay too. But this morning a big truck pass with a big machine pon top and he had to reverse and dis is wha happen,” a resident told this newspaper.
He said that a motorcyclist, a brand new Toyota Allion motorcar and a Toyota Tundra along with other categories of motorists have suffered as a result of the damaged road.
The collapse of the road also exposed the substandard work done by the contractor, given the fact that the Coldingen Access Road is one of the main carriageways for heavy duty machinery in that section of the East Coast of Demerara.
The residents are calling on those responsible for the damage to the road to fix it and not leave it up to the government.
For now, Dipcon, in collaboration with the NDC, has employed a temporary arrangement by filling the collapsed section with materials from its nearby asphalt plant.
“They break up dis road and dey might want charge government nuff money fuh fix it back,” another resident opined.

In this article it is noted that the NDC was requested to fix the road. While the citizens were right to appeal to the NDC, the NDC and citizens should know that that road is not the responsibility of the NDC, however the NDC as the people’s representative should be calling on the responsible authority to remedy the situation. I am simply making the point of the work to be done to have an informed citizentry and the level of knowledge and action required of the NDC. An institutional approach to governance and government has to be inculcated
