Two persons appeared in the City’s Court on Friday charged with attempting to smuggle protected birds out of
Guyana without a legal permit to do so.
Dhanwattie Persaud, 52, and Plant Manager Kayun Mohammed were both fined $140,000 when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan where they pleaded guilty to their individual charges.
Police said Persaud on April 27, and Mohamed of Lot 12 Enterprise, on April 28, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, were without the necessary permit, when they attempted to smuggle out of Guyana two Twa Twa birds (finches) among other species without being the holders of export/ import licences.
The court heard that on the day in question, the woman was an outgoing passenger on a Caribbean Airlines flight, destined for the JFK International Airport, New York and Mohamed was an outgoing passenger destined for Canada on a Fly Jamaica Flight the following day.
According to prosecutor Inspector Jeffers the man and the woman were passing their carry-on luggage through a security screen, when ranks at the luggage department observed peculiar images displayed.
After carting their luggage aside, a further search was conducted where Officers observed hidden inside hair curlers, the state birds and other species of birds, concealed within their luggage.
The Chief Magistrate eventually fined the two accused each with a default of a six- month prison sentence.
