Dear Editor,
The Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) is currently holding its meeting in Guyana. Normally their meetings would be hosted at the Pegasus Hotel. This time around, it is being held for some reason at the Marriott Hotel, a US brand of hotel which is operating in Georgetown, Guyana.
It is important to note that the purpose of COTED is to encourage interregional trade within Caricom and to remove all irritants and barriers to such trade so that the Caricom region as a whole, benefits economically.
With this in mind, I find it difficult to understand why the Caricom office in Guyana would move its meetings from the Pegasus Hotel, a local brand that has supported these meetings for many years to the Marriott hotel, which is a foreign brand.
I dare say that this goes against the spirit of regional integration, against the goal of intraregional trade and against the region as an economic bloc.
I am asking governments in the region and the Caricom secretariat to reexamine their choices and their sincerity and commitment to the goal of regional integration and intraregional trade. Robin Johnson Former Caricom employee
