A vagrant was on Friday sentenced to spend the next six months in prison for breaking and entering the St. John’s Association compound when he appeared at the City’s court.
City Magistrate Annette Singh ordered Mahase Sarjoo to spend six months in jail when he saved the court’s time and pleaded guilty to a break-in and entry charge.
The burglar who told the court that he had no fixed place of abode admitted that at Cowan Street, he broke and entered the building and stole two blankets, three stand fans, six drinking glasses and one Tex gas cylinder, around 19:00 hrs.
Police said that a Mr Edghill suspected the perpetrator on the day in question when he was about to make his second routine check of the premises. It appeared that the northern door of the building was forced open and through checks he noticed that items were missing.
The defendant, prosecutor Michael Grant said, was later spotted trying to exit the building with a bulky bag over his shoulders and the gas cylinder in his hand.
Edghill called the police and the defendant was apprehended with the items and escorted to the Brickdam Police station where he was charged for the offence.
