The Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation (DHBC) yesterday announced that the Bridge spanning the Demerara River, will be closed on Sunday for six hours to facilitate maintenance works.
The announcement was made at a press conference hosted by the DHBC at the company’s headquarters in Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara.
According to General Manager (GM) of the DHBC, Rawlston Adams, the maintenance works, which are pegged to cost some $50 M, will commence from 6:00hrs and is scheduled to be completed by 12:00 noon.
The maintenance work entails the removal and replacement of a pontoon that serves as a base for one of the hydraulic cabins. Adams explained that works of this nature are usually carried out at nights however, due to the sensitive components in the cabin; to do the swap during the day was the better alternative since it would reduce risks.
With the sensitive components in the cabin, the pontoon had to be customised. The lifting mechanism was also customised. Adams pointed out that without these customisations, the entire process would take days which could not be allowed.
It has been 15 years since the pontoons bearing the hydraulic cabins have been replaced.
Quizzed on whether he was concerned that the works might exceed the estimated time, the GM’s said that his team, in whom he has total confidence, has examined and taken into account the issues that could prove detrimental to the success of the project. As a result they have set in place various counter-measures.
However, Adams admitted that there is still a small window that something should go wrong.
He continued that this particular maintenance work is a part of a menu of works to be carried out on the retractor span. The remainder of the works, he assured, would affect the marine traffic only.
Discussions, he said, were already held with the various stakeholders. The nature of these works; the time, date etc. will be announced at a later time.
