– 163 cases listed for trial

The April session of the Demerara Criminal Assizes commenced at the Georgetown Supreme Court yesterday with 163 criminal matters listed for trial. The session was officially declared open following a traditional ceremonial parade and march past before a panel of judges in the vicinity of the High Court.
During the January session of the Demerara Criminal Assizes, Justice Navindra Singh, Madam Justice Jo-Ann Barlow and Madam Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry presided over a total of 184 cases.
The three judges were also identified to preside over panel one, two and three of the criminal proceedings listed in the new session. They are set to preside over a number of trials for the offences of Rape, Murder, Manslaughter Attempted Murder, Felonious Wounding, Carnal Knowledge, Incest, Armed Robbery, Buggery, Abduction, Unlawful & Malicious Wounding and Discharging a Loaded Firearm with Intent.
The cases set to come up in this session include the retrial of Charles Cush and Jevon Wharton for the murder of nine-year-old Sade Stoby. Stoby was raped, murdered and dumped in the backlands of Barnwell North Mocha, East Bank Demerara.
Cyon ‘Picture boy’ Collier will also face another trial for murder, while Colin Jones, Randy Mars, Japhar Simpson, David Anthony Watson and Basil Morgan are to be tried for allegedly setting fire to a Public Building.
Also still on the list are matters against Former GTU President, Colwyn King and Television Station Owner and Broadcaster Chandra Narine (CN) Sharma. Both men were arraigned on allegations of sexual offences. They were charged in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
