At the new City Council, the future doesn’t look good

As I sat in the ornate chamber of City Hall last Friday to witness the changing of the guard, well at least for some persons around the horse shoe table, after twenty two years of the directorate of the Georgetown Municipality, I could not help but be tickled at the fact that the more things change at the Council, the more they stay the same.
Here we had the chamber magnificently decorated for the occasion, and the staff in attendance dressed to the nines, rather than the casual dress down attire which is usually worn on Fridays, and much pomp and ceremony characterizing the installation of the new councilors, but paradoxically just outside this chamber there was a massive protest being staged by contracted workers who were not paid for services provided. How déjà vu is this situation for the workers and mortifying it must have been for the new Councillors to be confronted with this ‘Tune the Old Cow Died of’ at City Hall.
Something like this was bound to happen with the reckless fiscal management or complete lack of, at City Hall. It was just that the new Councillors were not expected to get a taste of the mismanagement so soon. I was also tickled pink at the haste in which the veteran Councillors or the ‘Old Guard’ hastened to stake their claims to the key positions of City Hall ensuring that the newcomers knew their places. Is this the change that everyone was expecting? Can we look ahead to to see monumental improvements within our capital? Here we have another clear example that Guyana’s politics has become distinctively winner-take-all.
