Duo on bail for separate break-ins

Two men from Alberttown were yesterday, released on bail after answering to separate charges of break and enter and larceny, when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
The first charge was read to Jan Clarke, of Lot 117 Third Street, Alberttown, Georgetown.
It is alleged that between March 3 and March 4, at Lot 12 Lamaha Street, Queenstown, he broke into the shop of Hardial Harripersaud and stole one monitor, seven Pioneer DVD decks, $200,000 cash, one Compac laptop among other items.
Clarke pleaded not guilty to the allegation and was ordered to post $75,000 bail.
An attorney for the defendant had argued that his client is a dispatcher at the Ambassador Taxi Service. He requested that his client be admitted to bail in a reasonable sum because he has no prior convictions or pending matter. The lawyer pointed out that Clarke was kept in custody beyond 72 hours.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones had no objections to bail.
This matter has been adjourned until April 11, for statements.
Meanwhile, 31-year-old Joel DePeazer was released on $20,000 bail on a charge of breaking into a home and stealing a gold chain.
DePeazer, of Lot 115 Third Street, Alberttown, told the court that he was a businessman. He is alleged to have stolen the item valued at $240,000 from the home of Calvin Ramotar on March 14, at Georgetown.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge. He told the court that he co-owned the property. He claimed that the complainant is in the habit of threatening and abusing him.
The defendant alleged that Ramotar would sometimes follow him with his car and call him insulting names.
In addition, he stated that the complainant has a dislike for him and that the charge against him stemmed from a business related issue they are having.
He was ordered to return to court on April 11, for statements.
