A reminder of the achievements of the Jagans

The month of March is significant for the PPP as it marks the birth and death anniversary of its founder leaders the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan and his wife Janet Jagan.
As is popular knowledge, Dr. Jagan was born on March 22, 1918 and died on March 6,1997 while still holding the highest office of the land, that of Executive President of Guyana. As fate would have it, his wife Janet Jagan also passed away in the month of March.
Both of them contributed significantly to the struggle for a free, independent and democratic Guyana. It is a rare occurrence in Caribbean, indeed world politics, where a husband-wife combination and the party they founded dominated political space for over five decades, both having served as Executive President of Guyana in certified free and fair elections.
Regrettably, both of them were unable to complete their full term in office. Dr. Jagan passed away while still in office and Mrs. Jagan’s presidential term came to an abrupt end due to ill health.
It is said that the true greatness of a person is measured by the number of persons who turned up to his or her funeral.
The funeral of Dr. Jagan saw what one writer described as’ a tidal wave of humanity’. People from all walks of life converged at Babu John in their thousands to send him off.
As we observe our 50th year of independence, it is important that we reflect on, and celebrate the lives of these two political icons who passed away in the month of March.
The lessons of discipline, dedication to cause, integrity, simplicity and high levels of political morality should be emulated by all those who aspire to political office.
