Defending National Basketball Champions, Pacesetters have revenge on its mind ahead of the start of the 2016
tournament tomorrow night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Pacesetters bounce into action Sunday night at 7pm against Eagles.
Head Coach of the team that won the national title last year, Clement Brusche was clear on its goal yesterday. “We are looking to exact revenge on our way to victory. We are not looking to squeeze pass anybody,” Brusche told Kaieteur Sport when contacted.
He was directly speaking about the likelihood of playing Linden’s Half Mile Bulls in the second round once he gets pass Eagles. Bulls play Amelia’s Ward Jets in the feature game tomorrow; the winner takes on the winner of the Pacesetters vs. Eagles game.
Pacesetters are anticipating Bulls in the next round because of the latter’s famous victory over them last August in the Forbes Burnham Memorial tournament. Pacesetters have never fully accepted the loss and want the opportunity to take revenge.
“Once we play as a team, we will win easy. We have what it takes to defend our title; we will do it easily. The problem is not who we could beat but who could beat Pacesetters,” Brusche boasted on the eve of the start of the biggest basketball showdown in Guyana.
Brusche informed that his team has retooled for the tournament. He noted that they have acquired the dominant centre from Melanie Patriots, Sherlan Legal and two other players. In addition, they will be promoting Under-23 stars, Jahleel Duke and Nathan Saul.
The defending champion Coach believes that those players, along with the familiar faces of Travis Burnett, one of the most lethal defensive guards; shooting guard, Steffon Gillis, forwards Randy Richardson and Royston Siland, the team is well poised to make a title defence.
“We have the youth to play up-tempo basketball, and the experience for when it matters down the stretch,” Brusche said, oozing a level of confidence that suggested that the club is certain that it will be holding the Championship Trophy in Guyana’s Jubilee year.
The first Round-of-16 in the tournament will be held on March 4, 5 and 6 while the Quarterfinals or Super Eight bounces off on March 11 and 12 before the semi-final or Final Four on March 13; the Grand Final will be held on March 19 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The top four teams will receive cash prizes: $500,000; $250,000; $150,000 and $100,000 for the teams placing first to fourth along with trophies. There will also be individual prizes for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament and finals.
