Yesterday marked the culmination of Mashramani activities in Linden, with the Schools
Mashramani parade.
The event saw hundreds of primary and nursery school children taking to the streets. Excited spectators lined both sides of Republic Avenue to view the spectacle.
The parade started outside Linden Technical Institute and ended at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground.
St. Aidan’s Primary was adjudged winner of the parade, for the Primary Level, with the One Mile Primary and the Watooka Day Primary copping the second and third spots respectively.
Pine Street Nursery won in the Nursery category, with Retrieve Nursery and Watooka Day Nursery in the second and third positions respectively.
Deputy Education officer (Primary) Shevon Greene-Brewster said that the event was made possible through the efforts of the respective schools. There was also support from the Region Ten Department of Educaton and the Regional Democratic Council in the form of materials. One teacher proudly noted, “We did our fundraisers and made sure that the children were well outfitted for the parade.”
Ms. Greene-Brewster thanked the various business entities in Linden that donated trophies. Among them were Bernard’s Variety and Mayfield Greene’s Variety.
A young cop: Notwithstanding recent protests at Linden by relatives and friends of several persons
who have been charged with serious crimes including murder, armed robbery and rape and who have been agitating for the removal of Commander Senior Superintendent Calvin Brutus of ‘E’ Division (Linden/Kwakwani), the Division continues to forge ahead with its Community Outreach Programmes in keeping with the Police Force’s Social Crime Prevention Programme.
According to the police, its Divisional Outreach Programmes have been gaining momentum through significant community support which have positively impacted on Police/Community Relations, more particularly with youth empowerment through life skills development and the inculcation of good moral values.
Yesterday, during the Children Mashramani Costume Competition at Mackenzie, Linden, a nursery school student who was a participant was dressed as the Police Commander of the Division.
