Dear Editor,
As a resident of Lodge Housing Scheme, I am saddened to see everyday a stagnant moss – covered, mosquito-infested, main drain/canal that is located north of Joseph Pollydore Street. Since the end of October 2015, the water level has remained high although the sun is blazing hot overhead during the day. To date nothing is being done to clear this drain so that the water can flow out freely. Our bridges are constantly threatened of being swamped. As result of the minimal downpour of rain from last week, the water level has risen at a dramatic high, threatening to flood to our homes.
Mr. Editor, it is not that we are not used to our homes being inundated by flood waters from the said drain/canal during the rainy season, but this time around is not flood water, since the long period of stagnated water in the drain is breeding ground for mosquitoes and other vermin to proliferate and thrive, making life a living hell for us. There is also the constant threat of water coming into our homes, and our wooden bridge infrastructure is affected by the high water. Added to our woes is the alleyway to the north that is bushy and abandoned not due fully to resident’s faults, since it requires the help of the City Council. This alleyway was partially cleaned in the last big cleanup in 2014, and not clean or cleared since by the relevant authority. Unfortunately, fogging cannot remove stagnated water, and the mosquito population continues to thrive. (At present, mosquito-borne illness -Dengue, Malaria, Chikungunia and now Zika are all a worrisome treat!)
On behalf of my fellow residents, I am calling on the relevant authority to act with haste so as to avert an impending health crisis in this important ward of the garden city. Concerned Citizen
