Drivers with power and status on the Harbour Bridge

After reading your news paper for years I came to the conclusion that your news paper is the only way for junior ranks in the Guyana Police Force to have an opportunity to sound there voice and make a difference. I read numerous letters written by law abiding citizens who mentioned their concerns about the overtaking and persons passing and cutting in front of them while they are in the line and the ranks stand by and do nothing. I would like to shed some light on that. Sir I would leave home at 05:00 hrs daily to ensure that the traffic flow freely on the western side of the bridge and for that to happen we placed orange cones but persons still continue to overtake the line. We decided to put barriers but things only got worse. Then we decided to arrest the offenders only to be greeted with phone calls from senior officers where we were instructed to have their friends release immediately or face transfers. Our commanders will not support us in having the traffic lawlessness at the bridge rectify, so we are faced with some real embarrassing situations everyday standing on that tarmac,
I can clearly say that these persons who would normally overtake the line in the morning are police officers, government officials and persons who are well connected. What can a junior rank like me do when I’m confronted by one of these individuals? On the other hand, every afternoon from Princess Street up to the Ruimveldt Public Road, there’s normally a line and you would find no one overtaking that line because if they do they know they will be prosecuted. Why can’t it be the same on the West Demerara? Is it because that’s a different Division? No sir. The ranks there are receiving the support from the commander and also the subordinate office in charge so they can be effective and execute their duties in a professional manner and in the process give the citizen of this country the service which they require. I pray that the Minister of Public Security, the Commissioner and the Traffic Chief can look into my concern and give us the support we need to have this lawlessness at the Harbour Bridge rectify.
