The inglorious end of Hamilton Green’s career

Dear Editor,
What has happened to the prolific letter writing of Mayor Hamilton Green that we used to see, with him continuously penning letters to the editors of the various dailies, during the period of the last government, railing against corruption and other unlawful activity? Or is it that he only sees the need to object to perceived wrongdoings when his party is in opposition?
He is now apparently quietly riding out his last days as Mayor overlooking the highest level of nepotism and cronyism ever seen at the City Council, with many of his colleague councillors and senior officers obtaining employment for their children, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, pushing the Council’s wages bill well past $200 million per month, yes over a whopping $200 million. This is in spite of the fact that most of the municipality’s services have been farmed out to private contractors, and the now new employees are doing nothing all day.
And this brings me to the next point whereby Mayor Green is again sitting quietly and allowing one individual whose prior experience is merely in money lending and food vending, to become the biggest contractor in the city, earning tens of millions of dollars each week for cleaning parts of the city, whilst a Councillor’s son is the next biggest contractor cleaning the cemetery and elsewhere. How shameful. He a major anti corruption proponent in the past is now quietly condoning massive fraudulence.
Why did he not raise a finger in defence of Dr. Jocelyn Loncke and the Georgetown-based Pan African Movement when Town Clerk Royston King sent in the Council’s work force, demolishing two concrete walls constructed by that body and towing away a 20-ft container from the facility that he provided to the organization, even as the Movement had big plans for utilizing the land leased to them on the Merriman’s Mall between Oronoque and Light Streets, Bourda. Is he now afraid of King? Or has he lost all of his teeth?
Why is the Mayor so silent on the extravagant lifestyle of the new Town Clerk, with bodyguards, drivers, secretarial staff, with three cars under his command, (one rented from a close connection) for a substantial amount each week, etc? He was very critical of the previous Town Clerks with far less resources.Why is he not concerned about the massive spending spree that the Council has embarked upon making it a massive breeding ground for corruption through kickbacks, and favours which will ultimately take the Council back into bankruptcy? Is this how this once most feared and controversial politician with an unrelenting thirst for power and recognition going to exit politics? Is he going to just disappear into oblivion? Tiptoe into the night? What a shame.
