Dear Editor,
Having to deal with my grandson of eight years, I always try to keep abreast with any new developments in the education system, so that I can communicate easily with him.
He brought to my attention there is a new form in delivering an answer to a Maths problem. For example, if you have 500+1, it should be expressed as five hundred, 1 and not five hundred and one, which means that you drop the “and.” He is puzzled, I am puzzled, and others that I have spoken with are also puzzled. What I would like to know is,
1 Where does this originate from?
2 What does it benefit the Mathematical system as a whole
3 If a student used ‘and’ in the near future at an exam, would he be marked as incorrect.
I hope not. Please whoever is in authority, do explain what is it at all. Vibert Kirton
