A man was killed on Saturday night after he allegedly lost control of the motorcar he was driving and crashed into a tree, at Letter T, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.
Dead is 40-year-old, Darwyn Michael Gordon, a carpenter, of Lot 3D De Kinderen, Mahaicony. Kaieteur News understands that the man was returning home from Belladrum, West Coast Berbice, when tragedy struck around 20:30hrs.
The police in a statement said that Gordon was driving a motor vehicle allegedly at a fast rate, when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a tree. He received injuries and was taken to the Mahaicony Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Gordon’s sister, Jacquelyn Roberts told this newspaper that her brother left home on Saturday, to visit the ancient county. She said that she is unclear of her brother’s reason for the visit, but related that he left in a hurry. But Nicola Mason, another one of the dead man’s sisters, said that her brother had left home to carry one of his friends to Berbice.
According to Roberts, Gordon had asked her son, Jason Sumner, to give him a ride to his destination. However, she said that after her son told her brother he had to “freshen up”, Gordon hopped into his Toyota Premio and went his way.
The distraught sister recalled that an hour after he left, she received a telephone call from her son, who told her of the accident. “A guy who was going up to Corentyne at the time called my son and told him about the accident,” she said.
She stated that her son rushed to the accident scene and she later received another call, this time from her son’s girlfriend. Roberts added that the woman began to sob over the phone, and that confirmed her worst fears—she was told that her sibling had died.
Family members related that Gordon was a very careful driver and that he was not driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
According to reports, his body, which was reportedly left hanging out of his car after the collision, was pulled from the vehicle by police and taken to the Mahaicony Hospital. Gordon, who has no children, leaves to mourn his girlfriend, sisters, nephew and other relatives and friends.
The police are conducting investigations.
