Dec 12, 2015 Letters
Dear Editor,
It is with a frustrated spirit that I am writing this letter. First off let me say that I am a nurse working at the Georgetown Public Hospital for over 10years and have never seen such unacceptable conduct as this. I along with about 100 other nurses have decided to start a petition against our new matron Mrs. Colleen Hicks. This woman came to the corporation, and the nurses felt that she was their savior against a domineering CEO Mr. Michael Khan ( former), and a disinterested Matron, Mrs. Audrey Corey. Not long after her arrival, Matron Hicks was viewed insubordinate by Mr. Khan and was relieved of her duties by him. We, the nurses felt that she was being victimized so we petitioned and protested her way back into that her chair. Alas! We had a change of government, change of CEO & a change of matron. Now a mere few months after her confirmation, Matron Colleen Hicks is showing her true colors. Firstly, she has promoted all of her friends and persons who were publicly loyal to her to senior management positions, irrespective of qualifications or suitability for the job. Matron Hicks and her group of friends have further gone on to dominate the hospital. Here are just a few of the nonsense being played out at the Georgetown public hospital.
The nurses are being targeted for wearing scrubs. If a nurse doesn’t have on a dress, she is refused the privilege of signing on and sent home, therefore has an absent day.
Nurses are being denied the pleasure of working overtime by managers namely Mr. Alonzo. Our duties are being pre set for us, without our input. Now most nurses have families, so if an emergency comes up, we are placed in an uncomfortable position, either we stay home & be absent or leave our family to go to work.
Any nurse who did not publicly support the matron is being victimized. Nurses are very fearful and considering other options.
If a staff by any chance becomes sick & has to see a doctor, that doctor is threatened with
repercussions if they issue sick leave.
There is a verbal threat to stop the salary of any nurse who stays home, and these threats are repeated by our union leader Kempton Alexander.
Now, Mr. Editor please tell me how could a Matron who claims to want to see nursing go forward be practicing the 11th century domineering tactics be good for the corporation in this 21e century.
