Following major social media uproar about Miss Guyana World Lisa Punch, the Miss World
Guyana Organisation is informing that efforts to correct the misinformation published in the Miss World-Guyana, Lisa Punch ‘Dance of the World’ costume have been successful.
The Miss World-Guyana Organisation noted concerns expressed in social media regarding what was perceived as direct comments made by Lisa Punch about her country.
“The Organisation in keeping with requirements had submitted the said information in advance of Lisa’s arrival in China. However, due to the language barrier, some of what was said was misinterpreted by our Chinese counterparts.
We wish to inform the public that the corrections were made today (yesterday) by the Miss World page administrator and now reads as follows on the Miss World website: www.missworld.com : “Guyana: The amazing Roger Gary designed my national dress and it represents my African ancestry.
Guyana is made up of six ethnicities: Indians, Africans, Europeans, Portuguese, Amerindians, and Chinese – it is a goldmine of cultures and my dress is symbolic of this. The dance I performed in my dress is actually a Ghanaian dance, which was inspired by my ancestors who were brought to Guyana as slaves.”
Punch, Guyana’s Ambassador to the 2015 Miss World Pageant, left for China on November 20, 2015 where she is expected to participate in a number of activities before the Miss World Finals on December 19 in Sanya.
She is one of 117 contestants vying for the coveted Miss World Title. The Regional title-holders have to compete in five challenge events leading up to the finals: Beauty with a Purpose, Multimedia, Sports, Talent, and Top Model. The various competitions offer the delegates an opportunity to win important points.
“Miss World Guyana and its 2015 Titleholder, Lisa Punch, wish to thank the public for its support as the Miss World Finals draw closer. The Organisation welcomes feedback from the public and as such, questions or comments about any aspect of the Miss World-Guyana Organisation or its titleholder may be submitted to its representatives at PS Media Group at 223-5018.”
Meanwhile following the first round of the Miss World talent competition that fast tracks the winner into the top 20, Punch has made it through to the second round after her delivery of an emotional rendition of her original song “One last Cry.”
