Dear Editor,
This is not good. It is not good that the main political opposition in Guyana has assumed the presence, contours, and durability of a running joke. The strongmen of old are now reduced to the impotence of shambling vacant creatures pawing the air with feeble meaningless gestures, and in words ridiculed for their mere utterance.
This society needs a vibrant opposition to hold the government’s feet to the coals, to be assured by an alert muscular watchdog. Instead, it is treated to the awful spectacle of those in the throes of slow self-destruction, who have dug deepening graves for themselves through the sharp implements of self-incriminating words and damning actions.
Truly, this official opposition is damned to a sick unsparing existence. It opens its mouth and the government of the day does not even have to respond. There are many-the press, the historians, the injured, and the once oppressed-who set the record straight by calling to task, through pinpointing inconsistency, hypocrisy, and political delinquency. It is political delinquency of a primitive unforgettable, unforgivable kind.
And so the new opposition has become a caricature of the spectral, exemplification of all that is increasingly moronic. Some of the demonic was long suspected, too. It is now a pale shrunken shadow of a once roaring uncontrolled monstrosity. Indeed, those whom the gods wish to destroy they first make….
Still, the group refuses to listen, to emerge from its medieval ideological and mental swamp into the new world and all of its sophistication, ethical challenges, and character demands. It refuses to read the terrain, interpret the telltale signs brightly flashing, undeniably loud. It sticks with a known triumvirate now shorn of standing and clothing, and exposed for all the world to see its members as they really are: ramshackle curiosities, derelict political operators of the worst stripe, and abundant in the puerile and palpably vacuous.
In this pantheon of the pathetic are secretaries come and gone, and a third that stride over them like a Colossus. The party persists with the failed and obstructive and divisive, even when it is obvious that they are out-of-place relics rendered inconsequential by historic out-of-proportion baggage. They do say that payback is a….The opposition ventures to speak and people laugh. They lurch erect and political youngsters throw stones at the irresistible bull’s-eye they present. Yes, the mills of the gods grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine.
There should be rejoicing, but there is only pity. This is not good for this place.
