Dear Editor,
I read with great surprise the letter of Mr. Yesu Persaud on the Diwali date controversy. Mr Persaud is a man I have the greatest respect for. I also admire his business acumen. But his advice to the Minister to endorse the Dharmic Sabha pronouncement of November 11, as Deepavali is wrong. This year Deepavali is a little tricky, but the decision is very clear, Deepavali is in Amawasya, (no moon) dark night . Poornima is full moon (Sukla paksh), the bright day, and then this moon gets a little darker each day until 15 days (tithi) is the darkest day, no moon, called Amawasya. Then again the moon starts a little each day and for the next 15 days it become the brightest or full moon (poornima). So diya (Deepavali) is lighted to bright the place, to see Rama’s face, to remove evils, you light one diya the day before etc. Our longitude is different from India, so we must calculate the time difference. It is not rocket science. Surveyors and engineers, to establish Azimuth/whole circle bearings, sometimes must take a peep on the sun, at a particular time and date to establish your property boundaries as, eg N40 degree 20 seconds S, or 195 degree etc.
Do you know that many Pandits cannot read the the Panchang/patra properly. Borrow my hundred year patra and see how many Hindu names are wrong.I must congratulate the minister, Ramjattan, for his explanation in the media. Maybe “Dem Boys Say” could speculate that he would be better as a pandit than to control crime. My personal belief is that Mr Ramjattan, has solved and taken affirmative action on more crimes than the last government. Pandit Yogesh(Joe) Persaud Former President of the Canada Pandit’s Council.
