There is a possibility that the river taxi service across the Berbice River might continue indefinitely, especially since Cabinet has received good reviews of this pilot project. This is according to Minister of State, Joseph Harmon.
Addressing the media yesterday, at the post-Cabinet press briefing, Harmon said, “We were advised that the boats are working very well.
The persons on the east and west banks of the Berbice River are very happy about the service and that there are at least 16 trips per day that these boats are making. They work from 6am to 6pm, and the arrangements are well in place,”
The system was introduced by the Government to aid the travelling public of the Berbice region. This was in light of the refusal of the Berbice River Bridge company to reduce the fares for commuters, something proposed by the Government.
This refusal came although a subsidy would have been provided to the company, to cover the losses incurred because of the reduction in tolls.”
The Minister further stated that the river taxis were intended to operate for one month in the first instance. “I believe that based on the kind of response we are getting, this might very well go beyond that,” Harmon said.
According to Harmon, Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, explained that the initiative is very beneficial to the children, the elderly and even the teachers, nurses and other public servants, who have to cross the Berbice River on a daily basis.
The government was forced to implement this initiative after discussions with the Berbice River Bridge Company Incorporated (BBCI) ended in stalemate with the latter refusing to implement the reduction in toll although the government had said that it would provide a subsidy so the company would not suffer any losses.
