Dear Editor,
It appears that Guyana is hell-bent on reducing its already small population.
As if enough persons are not dying from one illness or the other, or families are not leaving in droves for “greener pastures”, it seems that there is another addition to the suicide problem.
Yes, we are talking about the madness on the roads. Not only do the drivers appear to be furiously in a hurry to arrive at their destinations, but courtesy, care and the other Cs have been thrown out of the window.
This past week we learnt of two pickup drivers on the West Coast Demerara roadway which were reportedly speeding. One young man is dead and others injured. We can imagine the suffering of loved ones.
We can recall other instances of wanton actions that have caused untold suffering to loved ones and millions of dollars of damage to property.
The madness must stop.
It is time for the authorities to take action that will ensure the lives and properties of our citizens are protected.
A tough stance has to be taken…no more lip service.
I heard one person recommend the amending of current laws where persons found speeding and causing death on the roadways should be charged with murder.
Will this bring a screeching halt to the madness? Only time will tell. But it is something to think about.
I can go further. How about attempted murder for drivers who cause life-threatening injuries to persons on the roads because of irresponsible actions.
Editor, surely something to ponder on. Cobeer Persaud
