Police have detained two men following the discovery of a large cache of ammunition at Black Water, Mahdia, on Thursday.
A police release stated that ranks conducted a search on two men at Black Water, Mahdia, during which they found 14 twelve-gauge shotgun cartridges, 76 rounds of .38 ammunition, one hundred 9mm. rounds and one hundred and fifty .32 rounds.
During the past eight months, police have recovered 81 illegal firearms. These include one sub-machine gun, 46 pistols, 21 revolvers, six shotguns, six rifles and a pen-gun. This compares to 53 illegal firearms that were recovered by this time last year.
Government officials have urged civilians to use the recent one-month firearm amnesty to turn in illegal weapons and ammunition.
Up to last week, civilians had handed in two 16 gauge shotguns and two matching cartridges at “F” Division; two air rifles and one .32 pistol with two matching rounds in “A” Division; and a .22 air rifle in “E” Division (Linden/Kwakwani).
