The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) has recommended sanctions for Pacesetters’ forward, Jermaine Hamilton and Colts guard, Dave Causway following a post-game feud that erupted Wednesday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
President of the GABA, Andrew Hercules made the recommendations following receipt of a verbal report from referee, Dexter Douglas, who is currently in charge of the Guyana Basketball Officials’ Council (GBOC).
“Based on Mr. Douglas eye-witness account in addition to other bystanders that collaborated the exact happening, the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association would like to recommend the following in keeping with FIBA (International Basketball Federation) fair play and the player code of conduct,” the association stated in a letter to the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF).
The recommendations include: Causway “be fined an amount no greater than ten thousand dollars ($10,000) for the provocation of anger and disregard of a fan/player opinion”. In addition the recommendations include, “the suspension of Hamilton with immediate effect from all and any sanctioned Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association tournament or activity and by extension, the federation”.
The GABA further stated that at some point in the near future both individuals should be given an opportunity to apologize to the federation and the association. “The GABA will not, under no circumstance, condone violence of any form,” Hercules wrote.
The incident in question occurred after the Colts vs Victory Valley Royals semi-final game of the GABF Forbes Burnham Memorial Championships, where Causway apparently threw a ball in Hamilton’s direction and was physically accosted afterward.
“Based on Mr. Douglas account ‘Mr. Causway, following the conclusion of the game between Colts and Royals threw a basketball in the direction of Mr. Hamilton. Mr. Causway then walked away and upon walking away Mr. Hamilton ran up to Mr. Causway and dealt him a direct blow to his head,” the association said in its letter.
“Mr. Causway appeared to be dazed as he lay on the ground with blood gushing from his forehead,” it continued. Causway was one of the players that participated in the 2015 Caribbean Basketball Confederation Championships in Tortola.
In response to the recommendations for sanction, the national federation said that both players are suspended until further notice. In addition, the GABF has a meeting scheduled for September 6 where they will address the conduct of both players.
Following that meeting, the GABF will make a definitive pronouncement on the issue, based on the information and evidence related to the altercation.
