Guyana Blind cricket team on their way to St Lucia (Gordon is 2nd from right stooping).
The President of the West Indies Cricket Council for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Anthony Arvil, who he is also Executive Director of St Lucia Blind Welfare, arrived in Guyana last night to attend Gordon Sandiford’s Funeral today. Arvil is totally blind and he will be accompanied by his Administrative Assistant Ms. Debora Mclean.
The funeral is scheduled for Friday with viewing of the body at his home from 13:30hrs to 14:00hrs and 14:15hrs to 15:00hrs at the St Paul’s Church in Plaisance where there will be a service. The late National Blind cricketer will be buried at the Plaisance Burial Ground
The 28-year-old Sandiford, who hails from the East Coast Village of Pleasance, died on his way to the Hospital in St Lucia after a trip with his team mates to Beach after Guyana’s washed out match against the Windward Islands in the West Indies Blind Council’s Regional Blind 40-overs and t20 Cricket tournament.
This is the first time ever that a player had died during a Regional cricket tournament at any level.
The ‘BI’ (Totally Blind) Cricketer reportedly encountered some problems in the water and was brought to the Beach and given CPR before being taken by Ambulance to the hospital where he succumbed on the way there.
The body of Sandiford was returned to his native Guyana on Tuesday night on a Caribbean Airlines flight from St Lucia as Cargo in a box which was covered with the National flag ‘the Golden Arrow Head’ by Director of Sports Christopher Jones.
Today the Guyana Blind Cricket team members, decked out their green and black travel uniforms, will form a bat arch before the body enters the Church. A representative of the Government is expected to be present. (Sean Devers)
