Even before he dreamt of entering into the sport of motor racing, the name Vieira drove fear into the hearts of many competitors and even at the tender age of 17 years, the mere mention of Matthew Vieira is having the same effect on his rivals.
Young Matthew, whose father Mark Vieira is an illustrious motor racer both at home and abroad and who dominated the sport for a number of years seems to be following closely in his dad’s footsteps and has quickly become one of the most talked about talent in the sport.
The precocious young rider will be astride his newly-acquired Triumph Daytona 675R speed monster for tomorrow’s Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) ‘National Race of Champions’ Meet, at the South Dakota Circuit.
Vieira, speaking with Kaieteur Sport on Thursday evening said that even though the Meet will be his first for the year, he is eagerly looking forward to getting back into the saddle and the expected challenge from the field.
“We recently purchased the bike and while I will admit that we haven’t had the opportunity to get in adequate seat time, I still relish the opportunity to compete against my rivals and at the same time do my best.”
According to Vieira, work is continuing on modifying the bike to suit his style of riding, while the handling issues are being remedied as well, adding that the team is optimistic that all the issues will be ironed out before race day.
Just to underline his confidence, the young speedster told this newspaper that while he understood the challenge he faces in terms of the quality of the other riders, who he referred to as highly skilled, he was willing to assure the fans that, “they could expect a lot from me and I’m going to please them.”
Vieira is expected to face a stiff challenge from the likes of Carlos Rodrigues, Elliott Vieira, Kevin Persaud and company.
Quizzed on whether he was in a position to confirm the availability of Superbike supremo Stephen ‘Valentino Rossi’ Vieira’s participation in the Meet, he responded in the negative.
