Remanded prisoner attacked in heat of morning devotion
Like any other God-fearing person, murder accused Sean Collins, would rise at the break of dawn and surrender himself to the heavenly Father by reading a few Psalms before attending his court session.
But late last week the Devil was apparently offended with Collins’ morning devotion and sent one of his demons to intervene.
The remand prisoner was said to be sitting quietly on his bed holding the Bible in his palms and reciting the scriptures, when one of his fellow inmates was reluctant to keep quite.
Collins was caught up in the moment and calmly asked the inmate to be quiet. However the inmate became annoyed and dealt Collins several punches to the face.
As a result an altercation ensued between the two parties which caught the attention of several other inmates and prison officers as well. The prisoner officers mediated and managed to prevent the fight from escalating.
Collins and the inmate were subsequently escorted to the office where they were counseled and asked to explain the reason for the fight. The inmate, who was still angry suddenly reached into a rack, grabbed a wooden baton and dealt Collins several blows to the forehead.
Collins was left in an unconscious state and was later rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), for treatment.
When Kaieteur News visited the Ketley and Drysdale Streets, Charlestown resident he was seen chained to his bed and under guard. From all indications he received head injuries, since his head was wrapped several times with bandage and blood was seeping out. His right eye was blood shot.
The eighteen year-old was remanded to prison since January 2014 for the murder of taxi driver, Raphael Campbell, whose body was found at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.
According to reports Campbell of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, was murdered between January 2 and January 3, 2014. He was shot to the head and dumped at a backdam in Liliendaal; his body was subsequently identified by family members.
It was reported that Collins and two other men stopped Campbell on January 2, 2014, at Camp Street, Georgetown. Campbell reportedly took the passengers to East Coast Demerara, where he was slain.
The police had said that on January 3, 2014, Collins and four other youths were stopped on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway while they were in a black Toyota Premio that was stolen from the murdered driver.
Collins’ Preliminary Inquiry (PI) is currently being heard at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Zamilla Ali-Seepaul.
