The nation’s best strongmen and women in the Masters and Intermediate categories will this Sunday be locked in stern competition when the Fitness Express/Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) stages this year’s Masters and Intermediate championships at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue from 10:00hrs. In handing over the sponsorship cheque to GAPF Secretary, Gordon Spencer, Fitness Express Owner/Manager Jamie McDonald said that he was pleased to be continuing his partnership with the federation.
“We have been sponsoring this and other competitions of the federation for a few years now and have been pleased with the level of progress the sport has been making. These local competitions are very important as it prepares our athletes for overseas competitions and they have been doing us proud.”
Spencer in response expressed thanks on behalf of the GAPF to McDonald for their continued commitment to the athletes and the sport.
The weigh-in will commence at 07:00hrs on Sunday and end two hours later, lifting time will start at 10:00hrs. According to the federation, eighteen (18) lifters have completed the registration process and will be in action.
Meanwhile, the inaugural Samuel ‘Sammy’ Barker (Unequipped) Invitational Championship will come off on August 30 next in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden, home town of the late Barker.
The venue is the Mackenzie High School with the closing date for registration being August 22. The GAPF has disclosed that any competitor can enter this competition. Further details can be had from the championship secretary on Tel #s 641 8558 or 669 1221.
