Amateur boxers called to international duty to be encamped
The intense rivalry between the boxers of the Republican Boxing Gym and those from the Guyana Defense Force will resume when the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) stages the National Novices Boxing Championships from Friday July 24-26 next.
This is the first stage to senior boxing and the boxers in this department are usually devoid of the requisite skills as their senior counterparts. As such, the fans are oft times treated to unorthodox, punch filled displays.
Over the past months boxers out of the GDF and the Republican Gyms have demonstrated a genuine dislike for each other and have been engaged in several slugfests to stamp their authority. The rivalry is expected to resume and fans can be assured of the fistic action in store. Apart from these two gyms, the boxers from several other institutions will most likely stake a claim for a lucrative spot on the podium. These include those from the Forgotten Youth Foundation, Young Achievers, Harpy Eagles, Ricola and Caryll’s Boxing Gym among others. The weigh in and medical examination of the pugilists will take place at the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym on the morning of the bouts and the action will get underway at 19:00hrs nightly.
Meanwhile, the Novice championships will be preceded by a National Under-16 tournament scheduled for the first week in August on the West Coast Demerara as the GBA continues its drive to spread the sport to all the regions.
The senior boxers will be called to duty pretty soon as Tournament Director (GBA), Terrence Poole informed that a team of boxers will soon be encamped to travel to neighbouring Venezuela to participate in the American Continental Championships. That championship will be staged August 15-23 and is expected to test the mettle of local amateurs.
Those boxers identified for encampment will be released soon and will be under the tutelage of Poole, Sebert Blake and national coach, Wencel Thomas.
