NC head Urling calls on Govt to support Elite League

President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Normalisation Committee Clinton Urling is calling on the Government of Guyana to support the Elite League which is set to start by August month end next.

Speaking at a press conference held yesterday at the GFF head office, Urling said for the Elite League to be successful it must have the support from corporate Guyana. He noted that similar leagues in other countries have been flourishing because of tremendous Government support. “For all our development plans to be successful it will require the Government financial support, this is one of the major ingredients.” “Football is important to Guyanese people so I am appealing to the Government to come on board,” he added.
Tariq Williams of the Normalisation Committee (NC) informed that the Competition Committee has completed the bylaws for the league and will submit same to NC before they forward it to CONCACAAF for their input.
He said that sponsorship is critical for the league and they have been in talks with both the private sector and Government for their assistance. Williams stated that Admiral is the official kit sponsor of the league and their representatives will be here shortly for a meeting with the eight clubs, adding that once this is done they will be able to work out a specific date for the tournament to start.
Urling also informed that the GFF is partnering with Help and Shelter to stamp out domestic violence. “One of the platforms we have adopted for corporate social responsibility is domestic violence; the first two teams that will participate within the next few weeks in a sensitizing programme are our Senior Men’s National and the Under-23 teams.
We also want to include almost all football stake holders to kick out domestic violence which will include our Elite League and club teams,” he said.
In relation Constitutional reform, Urling stated that this is an important item on the agenda for the NC. He noted that they have completed the GFF constitution and the next stage is to look at the members’ constitution and supervise their elections.
“The way we intend to do this is to focus on three different groups; Regional Association, Eight Elite members and Special Interest groups. We will engage an attorney to guide the NC in that process and will meet with each one of those groups to discuss the template and how it mirrors the GFF constitution,” argued Urling.
However he explained that it may be difficult for them to meet the September deadline in that the constitution requires at least six weeks to notify the members of the congress. The NC head stated that the Providence centre is a major initiative for the GFF adding that this is very crucial for the federation going forward. He said that FIFA should be here in August and they will submit the plan for their advice.
