DEAR EDITOR,
With reference to a headline in Sunday’s (July 12) edition of the Kaieteur News, ‘GRA Deputy Commissioner General sent packing’, I am appalled by the seemingly biased reporting by whichever reporter was covering this story. The report that was given by the Revenue Authority is that Mr. Sealey’s contract had expired and a decision was taken not to renew it.
The Kaieteur News report goes on to say that Mr. Sealey’s rehiring was met with some opposition in the then PPP/C-led administration. Now a person could be accused of wrongdoing but without substantial evidence to try in a court of law or that would be in violation of one’s contract, the individual is considered innocent until proven guilty.
This sort of reporting reminds me of the dogmatic subjectivity that has been long associated with the Kaieteur News. Addressing someone’s termination of service as sent packing when in fact his contract is merely not renewed is an attempt to hint at sensationalised reporting or a biased view towards an organisation or individual.
Even though I fully understand the frustration that has built up with the previous administration due to alleged corruption and the optimism felt by the election of a new administration, we must not forget our responsibility to continue to act decently and professionally in the standards we set for ourselves.
Journalism is a very important profession in terms of educating the public of the issues relating to them, but if approached from a biased point of view, it has the power to incite varying reaction from the uninformed public.
In light of the progress made recently in our country’s history, let us continue to embrace this wave of positivity. We have commissions of inquiry conducting investigations into wrongdoing in the previous administration, and should allow this process to be respected and desist from allowing our political agenda (if any), biases and preferences to cloud or judgment and awareness for responsible reporting.
It is my hope that my opinion is taken in good stead
Adrian Sukhram
