Around the world, schools such as Harvard University are well known to students. Even here in Guyana, such top schools are highly coveted by students and on Tuesday, hundreds of Guyanese got the opportunity to find
out more about studying in the United States.
The Queen’s College auditorium was a hive of activity when the US College Fair was held. The event, sponsored by the US Embassy of Guyana, saw participation by about a dozen American colleges.
From the event’s commencement, students swarmed the auditorium, moving from table to table to find out as much information as possible.
Other than Harvard University, other highly competitive colleges such as Hamilton, Emory, and Georgetown Universities were on display. Information on lesser competitive colleges such as Arizona State University and the University of Miami were also present.
A range of local high schools was also present and even some persons who had already graduated.
According to a representative from the US Embassy, the fair allowed students to view the options available to them outside of Guyana. The fair was also conducted to provide easier access to pertinent information on studying in the US.
The Education USA Advising Center was also present and provided visitors with information on the college system in the US. The center provided information on education institutes and the standardized tests available to international students.
From observations made, the question of acquiring a student visa was one of the most asked at the fair. Those in attendance were also keen on finding out more about scholarships and finding ways to fund their education.
One student from the St. Roses High School explained that she was interested in studying in the US and attended the fair to learn how she could acquire this dream. She added that the wide array of options was overwhelming and commended the organizers of the event for showing Guyanese what was out there.
Since 2010, the US Embassy has been hosting the US College Fair in Guyana.
