A duo was yesterday sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, each, after they were found with 12.5 grams of cocaine in their possession on March 11, last, at Cross Street, Georgetown. They were charged with having the drug for the purpose of trafficking.
Marcie Andrews, 27, of La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara and Richard Prescod, 27, of East Ruimveldt, were both charged last March, and made several appearances at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts over the last few months.
Yesterday, the two appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Fabayo Azore charged with trafficking cocaine.
Police Prosecutor Simone Payne told the court that on the day in question; the police were on patrol in the area when they observed Prescod throwing a bag into a yard. The police went in search of the bag and retrieved it.
Upon inspection, they found a substance suspected to be narcotic, and later confirmed it to be cocaine.
Payne added that the defendants were arrested and told of the offence. She objected to bail citing the prevalence and seriousness of the offence.
The Magistrate upheld the Prosecutor’s requests and remanded both Prescod and Andrews to prison. Both were sentenced yesterday.
Andrews who was a vendor prior to this offence once served a one month sentence for damage to property. Prescod have no prior offences.
The Magistrate considering the quantity of the drug fined them both $10,000 each and sentenced them to three years’ imprisonment.
