The Guyana Football Federation kicked off its quest to increase the referees pool when it hosted a successful Referees Beginners Course from May 23 – 25 last at the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport Resource Centre, Woolford Avenue and Camp Street, Georgetown.
According to a press release from the GFF, this first initiative for the year attracted a total of 27 persons and they recorded a pass rate of 95%. Sixteen female and 11 males attended. The top female was Ms Ronecia Lewis of Upper Demerara who achieved a pass mark of 80 % while the leading male was West Demerara’s Robert Christiani who garnered 84%.
The federation is alerting other persons who wish to become a referee that another Beginners Course would be held in July.
Meanwhile, intense training will commence today for referees and will continue on a weekly basis at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue in the City. Other grounds around Guyana where training would also be held are the Wisburg Secondary School in Linden and the # 5 Community ground in Berbice. Sessions will commence at 17:00hrs.
The Referee’s Course forms part of the development plans of the GFF for the sport and will also target Coaches and Players.
