Former policeman, Jarell Huntley, was handed a 10-year jail sentence, by Magistrate Judy Latchman,
after he was found guilty for the illegal possession of a gun and ammunition.
Huntley, 27, of 140 Lamaha Springs, Greater Georgetown, was found guilty yesterday at the conclusion of a one-year long trial.
The convict was found in possession of a nine mm Glock pistol on March 11, 2014 at Barrack and Camp Streets, without being the holder of a firearm licence.
He was also convicted for having 14 live rounds of ammunition in his possession on the day in question, when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
During his first court hearing, Attorney Bernard Da Silva, requested bail at a reasonable amount. The lawyer claimed that his client had vehemently denied the allegations before the court.
Da Silva told the court that the weapon found on his client’s person “was just a toy gun.”
Police Prosecutor, Vishnu Hunte, strongly argued that the gun is in fact a real one and not a ‘toy gun’ as was being claimed by the defence. He submitted that the prosecution has proven its case beyond reasonable doubt that the gun was found in Huntley’s possession.
Before handing down her sentence the Magistrate took into consideration all mitigating factors, seriousness, prevalence and penalty the offence attracts.
Huntley will serve a five-year jail term for each charge. However, they will run concurrently.
He reportedly used the weapons to threaten his business partner, Surendra Etwaroo.
The man, who is an ex-intelligence cop, had reportedly called Etwaroo and “threatened to harm his family if he did not pay them their money.”
Huntley was arrested outside Special Branch Headquarters after an unlicensed firearm was found in his possession.
The defendant made his first court appearance in March, 2014 and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
