DEAR EDITOR,
Congratulations are in order for the Elections Commission, City Hall, the media, the political parties who have submitted their lists, and indeed the Guyanese people for an excellent Nomination Day. However, it never seems to amaze anyone of the political dynamics in Guyana.
Going through the list of candidates of the PPP revealed that 11 persons on the list are children of the leadership of that party. If one is to do a simple analysis of this fact, it would reveal that the number of children on the list represents 17% of the 65-seat parliament. If one is to consider the last parliamentary seat allocation, the number of children of party leaders on the list represents 34% of that allocation.
When one considers that the PPP has been in office for 23 years, it is hard to believe that they could not get persons of quality to be on their list. It’s either the PPP thinks that the leadership of the party must remain in the family of current leaders, or it’s animal farm all over again.
Is the PPP incapable of getting competent, qualified, trail-blazing Guyanese to be on their list? Or does the party only want the children of the leaders in the new leadership positions because they believe that all Guyanese are fools and will vote for them regardless of their plot. Do they really believe that Guyanese will continue to satisfy their thirst for power and that of their children?
The leadership of the PPP firmly believe that they and their children deserve whatever they want, and the rest of us will have to fall in line or be cast to the dogs. This nonsense will come to an end, and it will end on May 11th.
I am calling on all Guyanese to please send a clear and strong message by voting firmly for the opposition alliance. I will continue to join in the call for a free Guyana for all Guyanese. I will also ask the new government after May 11th, to ensure that all elected parliamentarians give way to new faces in the next elections. I will also work with our new government to train Guyanese who are desirous of becoming future parliamentarians and for other official offices.
We deserve a new Guyana, and it will begin on May 12th after the votes are counted and the new government is elected to office.
Charles Sugrim
