No journalist could be satisfied with attending press conferences to only hear what public officials have to say

Please refer to an article which appeared in your Kaieteur News of April 2, 2015: “Kaieteur reporters walk out after being insulted at Brassington’s press conference”. Kaieteur News reporters must be congratulated for their action against the disrespectful action meted out to them by Mr. Kit Nascimento. Who does he think he is? I hope the Guyana Press Association and the Private Media Owners Association and all civic-minded Guyanese publicly condemn this attack on specifically Kaieteur News and, in fact, all other media outfits that do not appear to be supporting the PPP/C government. It is a real pity that Mr. Nascimento felt obligated to unashamedly, stoop so low, to attack, Kaieteur News reporters, at a media event.
But Mr. Nascimento’s action is part of a wider pattern of abuse practised by the PPP/C. Just the other day, a senior government official abused the editor and other reporters from the very Kaieteur News at a press conference hosted by PPP/C General Secretary, Mr. Clement Rohee, at Freedom House and at the Office of the President. At his recent press conference, Former President BJ also restricted Kaieteur News reporters to two questions. The question is why would anyone, including the government or government agencies, invite the media to a conference and then prevent journalists and reporters from asking real serious questions about the issue/s discussed? Perhaps, that conference was just a sham, a mere public relations exercise to deceive the public. No journalist could be satisfied with attending press conference to only hear what public officials have to say without asking question about their utterances.
I would like to encourage the owner of that newspaper and all the staff to continue the good work of holding the government accountable for action to citizens.
