…suspect nabbed while making police report
A 21-year-old man of Lot 44 Princes Street, Wortmanville, lost his life just after sundown yesterday when a distant relative delivered a single, but fatal stab wound to his heart during an altercation. Carlos Solomon was said to have died in the arms of his sister-in-law Ormelett Bourne, while being rushed for medical attention just after 18:00 hours yesterday.
The suspect is said to be his stepfather’s grandson, Nicolas Hercules, who was arrested at the Alberttown Police Station when he went there to report the altercation. Officers had to chase down the suspect after he attempted to flee the station upon learning of Solomon’s demise.
Bourne, who witnessed the stabbing, said that she was standing at a window when she saw the scuffle between the victim and the suspect who is said to be younger than the deceased. Bourne said that the two men were in a prolonged tug of war which saw both persons falling to the ground on separate occasions. The suspect, she said, eventually stabbed the deceased with a knife he reportedly had on his person.
After receiving the blow, Solomon was left lying on the ground until persons started to surround him. A taxi was later summoned and Bourne accompanied Solomon to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Bourne said that she realized Solomon was badly injured since he was panting for breath. She said that after a short while, movement from her brother-in-law became less, until she saw him take a deep breath. “He was panting for breath and then nothing. He died in my arms,” the weeping relative stated.
According to Bourne and Solomon’s mother, Kaye Chester, her son and the suspect did not get along; they had no positive encounters with each other. The mother believes that yesterday’s event was the result of an incident that had occurred on Tuesday.
She explained that the suspect and her son live in the same yard which has a two-storey wooden house. The suspect lives downstairs with his family, while her son lives upstairs with her, her reputed husband, his siblings and others.
She said that on Tuesday her son told her that he had visited a female friend two doors away and a male person not known to him, asked the female, ‘This is the person?’ and immediately approached Solomon, chucked him and then slapped him. Chester said her son retaliated to the unforeseen attack and fled home.
However, this male person with others, she was told, reportedly turned up at the Lot 44 property in a motorcar armed with weapons, but nothing happened. Additionally, Solomon’s killer was also attacked by this unknown male person and others; and this could have led to the fight yesterday since the suspect may have believed that Solomon had brought trouble to the yard.
She believes that the issue between the deceased and the suspect may have stemmed from the other incident, since prior to the stabbing, the suspect was heard warning the victim not to come downstairs and made threats toward him.
She said she heard her son reply to the suspect that he could not prevent him from coming into the yard. After much argument, the fight finally occurred.
While at the hospital, one overheard the female rank stationed there explaining to Bourne that the suspect was apprehended. It appears that the said time the suspect was making the report; the rank had called the Alberttown Station to report that a murder had occurred. He then learnt of Solomon’s demise and sprinted from the police station, leading officers on a foot chase. He was subsequently apprehended.
At Solomon’s home several young persons had converged on the scene expressing disappointment at what occurred, especially since the persons were to some extent, family. One young man was heard saying, “Only yesterday I talk to dem man.”
Solomon was said to be a sickly person and was unable to hold a job. He spent a short time employed at the GPHC as a porter between late February and early March. Solomon’s death is the 36th murder for the year.
