DEAR EDITOR,
I believe the Coalition should and must negotiate the transfer of power with the current PPP Government. Guyana is hopeful, very hopefully that this Coalition is the beginning of the end of a culture of racial politics and state corruption of all forms, both of which have created 48 years of political instability in Guyana, retarded development, unnecessary violence and constructed mistrust.
The power behind the Coalition is the aspirations and desires of all right thinking Guyanese to truly come together to build a better, safer and more inclusive Guyana. This takes a lot of work, however I believe that it will also help us to finally shape a National Identity that Guyanese can relate to, feel proud about, and market to the entire world.
The core weakness of the PPP Government is that they are fighting against the expressed desires of the majority of Guyanese, many of our development partners and international watchdog groups. A Government of all the people fighting against inclusive governance, national unity and transparent and accountable governance only means a Government with a big bag of dirty laundry to hide and sanitize.
Therefore I suggest that the APNC/AFC Coalition begins seriously considering and planning negotiations to facilitate the transfer of power while providing some concessions to the PPP Government. A plan should be proposed or if this is seen as to provocative, then a plan must at least be in place.
Not only will this reduce fears, desperation and proxy efforts to destabilize Guyana and the election process allegedly by certain elements within or close to the PPP Government, it also serves as a good litmus test of the Coalition’s principle to practice real inclusive governance. It will be an act of political maturity and shared trust from both the Coalition and the PPP Government. This may be the most basic yet fundamental act that we can take as a people to change the political direction of our country. Mike Archer
