Dear Editor,
The outburst by Jagdeo at Babu Jaan two weeks ago clearly displays the underlying problem within the country.
It is evident that where racial integration is concerned in Guyana, the politicians, especially those in the government have made very little progress.
Despite the appearance of Indo and Afro Guyanese living in harmony, the evil of racial hatred is still in the minds of many, including those in authority.
This evil which has plagued the country for the past 60 years is the main cause for the lack of real political, economic, social and civil progress in Guyana.
The division of the two main races and the alleged practice of raw racism are highlighted when those of status like Jagdeo allegedly make statements like the “PPP is a coolie people party” and then turn around and blame the PNC for such statements.
In Guyana, the electorate are forever too quiet on the issue of race-based politics being practiced in the country, allowing those politicians who practiced it to proceed, which in every election takes them back to square one of living in a divided, make-believe society of racial harmony.
Guyana’s politics is just a continual battle of one racial political group against another racial political group being supported by an equally divided, biased racial group of citizens.
This has been the situation since the 1950s when the leaders of the PPP and the PNC realized that they cannot be elected to office on issues or their merit, but mainly on their race.
The fact is the citizens of Guyana live in a divisive society based on individualism, community, ethnicity, race, religion, career choice, politics, etc.
Regrettably, the electorate is faced with the same race–based politics in this election and those who practiced it are unpatriotic and evil. In the past, race-bait politics appeared to be a vote getter for those in power.
But those who have divided the country along racial lines, destroyed democracy, gave contracts to friends, family and party officials, and raped the treasury will be discredited at all costs thus destroying their chances of being re-elected to office in the General Election on May 11.
In our humble view, Guyana does not need leaders like the current stock who are dishonest and power drunk and have become dictators.
